In 1906, he made his most important invention with the development of a new type of vacuum gauge that today bears his name, the Pirani gauge.

A common variant is the Pirani gauge which uses a single platinum filament as both the heated element and RTD . These gauges are accurate from 10 torr to 10 " 3 torr, but they are sensitive to the chemical composition of the gases being measured.

The alternative is the Pirani gauge, which operates in a similar way, over approximately the same pressure range, but is only a 2-terminal device, sensing the change in resistance with temperature of a thin electrically heated wire, rather than using a thermocouple.
